01 Do you need exactly five slots?
No. A six-, ten- or twelve-slot plan can serve a five-player group if the plan otherwise fits. Slots limit concurrent connections; they do not describe the memory a developed world needs. If five includes the owner, you need five concurrent places. If five friends will join you, you need six. Count people online at once, not the number in a Discord group.
For close friends, write down three constraints before shopping: everyone’s platform, the longest acceptable offline period, and whether somebody is willing to administer a VPS. If the world only needs to run when one person plays, an existing-PC arrangement may be enough. If friends play at different hours, budget for a persistent server.
02 A price comparison that preserves the billing conditions
On October 31, 2026, Broccoli ↗ lists a six-player tier at $12.99/month. Split equally among five people, that is approximately $2.60 per person per month before tax. Pine ↗ lists its twelve-slot Essential tier at $14.99/month, approximately $3.00 per person. Neither calculation establishes which server performs better.
Hostinger ↗ shows $9.49/month equivalent on a 24-month commitment: $227.76 upfront, or $45.55 upfront per person if five people split it. Its displayed $14.99/month renewal would be about $3.00 per person monthly before tax. A $9.49 headline is therefore not the same cash commitment as a month-to-month $12.99 plan.
03 The cheapest plan is the one that survives your world
The official memory guidance ↗ cautions against treating bootable 8 GB as a guarantee. A plan labelled “five players” cannot overrule that warning. Ask how the host handles memory exhaustion: graceful restart, forced termination, automatic billing upgrade or a support ticket. Get the answer before your group invests hours.
Keep a quote worksheet with monthly charge, renewal, upfront term, backup/export cost, region, actual RAM and upgrade conditions. Add two scenarios: everyone stays for three months; half the group leaves after the first month. A discounted long commitment can lose to monthly billing if the group stops playing early. The budget calculator ↗ computes your own quote without pretending to predict performance.
04 A practical buying rule for a private friend group
- Eliminate plans that cannot serve your platform or allow full save export.
- Prefer a short initial term or a clearly defined trial while the group tests the world.
- Test busy bases and exploration together; compare peak use with the plan’s real ceiling.
- Restore a downloaded backup in a separate instance before any long renewal.
- Agree who pays, who holds the account and where the off-server save copy lives.
