Cloth Config API: Install the Right Dependency for Fabric, Forge or NeoForge

Resolve a missing Cloth Config dependency by matching game version, loader and environment, with a controlled restart and rollback check.

Based on the linked project documentation, checked October 31, 2026. Match instructions to your edition, loader and build. Commands are documented examples; this is not a hosted-server benchmark.

01 What Cloth Config is used for

Cloth Config API is a configuration-screen library used by other Minecraft mods. It is not a standalone content pack or a universal performance fix. If a loader error names it, the important question is which installed mod requires which compatible dependency version.

The author’s published project page ↗ lists releases across multiple loader families. Those compatibility filters are not permission to place any file on any server. Select the exact game release and loader, then read the environment requirements of the specific file and the mod that depends on it. The project’s old repository description alone should not overrule current release metadata.

02 Use a compatibility tuple instead of “latest”

MatchExample question
Edition and game releaseIs this a Java mod for the exact release used by this instance?
Loader familyDoes the file target Fabric, Forge or NeoForge?
Required version rangeWhat does the requesting mod’s error or manifest require?
EnvironmentDoes this dependency belong on this client, dedicated server or both?
Existing copiesAre incompatible duplicate JARs already present?

Fabric’s mod installation guide ↗ makes version and loader matching explicit. A successful download is not a compatibility check. Keep a short manifest so the next update does not erase the combination that worked.

03 Install into the failing instance and test one change

  1. Close the affected client or stop the server and preserve the old mods/configuration.
  2. Read the dependency error and record the required version range.
  3. Download the matching file from the author’s linked project release.
  4. Replace an incompatible copy rather than leaving two conflicting versions in mods.
  5. Restart the same instance and check whether the original dependency error is resolved.

If the next message identifies another dependency, treat it as new evidence. If the game crashes on a client-only class in a headless server, revisit the environment requirement rather than trying random library versions. Use the log workflow to keep the full error context.

04 Validate the configuration screen and server connection

A successful launch is the first check. Then open the requesting mod’s configuration screen where applicable, change a harmless setting and confirm it survives a restart. For multiplayer, join with the matching client pack and verify the expected feature rather than assuming the dependency made all client/server versions compatible.

If the change fails, restore the previous known-good set as a group. Do not remove a library that other installed mods still require merely because you removed one dependent mod. Record what requested it and why its version was selected. The larger modpack-server checklist prevents the same mistake at the next pack update.
